With a history and namesake that draws on Adelaide’s rich past, The Playford was once the site of News Limited and housed the first board meeting for News Corp held by Rupert Murdoch in 1979. The hotel’s name harks back to the state’s former premier, Sir Thomas Playford who governed from 1938 to 1965. During his time as premier, Playford oversaw major population and economic gains that contributed to the flourishing city Adelaide is to this day. The original building was demolished in 1997 by renowned hotelier and hospitality industry leader Bill Sparr who had a vision to rebuild a hotel that would complement the surrounding streetscape and which would become Australia’s first genuine Art’s hotel
