Buried Village of Te Wairoa

Service Description

Buried Village - destroyed by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, the village of Te Wairoa is today a living museum where visitors can experience a unique piece of New Zealand history.
Take an emotional journey through the museum - a memorial to the people who tragically lost their lives - a tribute to the heroes and survivors of that fateful night.
View the excavated remains of Te Wairoa village, which still lies partially buried in volcanic mud and ash.
View sensational wilderness, pristine native bush, wild rainbow trout and waterfalls.
The Tuhourangi people are the original inhabitants of Tarawera and caretakers of the famous Pink and White Terraces, NZ's first tourism entrepreneurs. Today their descendants proudly guide at various times during the day.
Tearooms serving Devonshire teas and freshly baked scones, excellent coffees, cakes and home made lunches.
Souvenir store with authentic Maori carvings.
Allow 90 mins to view. Open daily from 9am. History alive today...
