Why you need to include these activities in your next team building event agenda

Released by RACV City Club on Monday, 10 September 2018

Corporate team building has come a long way from the days of awkward role-playing games held in stuffy boardrooms. From culinary masterclasses, to fun golf challenges, and even yoga sessions served with a side of gin, RACV Resorts and Clubs offer a range of out-of-the-ordinary activities to take your next conference or team building day to the next level.

Whether you’re planning a conference, putting together a reward trip for staff or preparing a corporate team building day, here are nine engaging activities to include on the agenda:

1. Gin & Yin Yoga

A genius way to relax, Gin & Yin merges gentle, slow Yin yoga poses with gin drinking to create the ultimate way to unwind after a conference session. Held in the amphitheatre of the RACV Inverloch Resort Gin & Yin is facilitated by local Yin practitioner Elizabeth Sadler. Understanding that a good conference or team building day is all about balance, the resort’s state-of-the-art purpose-built conference and events centre provides the perfect space for the more formal part of the day, while Gin & Yin offers a creative approach to relaxation.

2. Masterchef Cook-Off

From abseiling Mt Tinbeerwah, to kayaking Noosa River and going on a guided hike through Noosa National Park, the RACV Noosa Resort has plenty of landscapes perfect for team building activities right on its doorstep. Apart from energetic activities in nature, the resort’s BBQ Masterchef activity remains a firm favourite. Under the guidance of the resort’s head chef, teams design menus, prepare themed courses, create table settings and then sit down for a feast. With judges choosing a BBQ Masterchef Champion, this team building activity always proves to be a hot competition!

3. Scavenger Hunt

No one wants to be trapped in a conference room for a whole day without a break, so that’s why RACV Goldfields Resort has devised a wide range of entertaining activities designed to build analytical skills, get the brain working in different ways and foster connections between team members. The Kangaroo Trail Scavenger Hunt is a top way to have a break from the boardroom, get some fresh air, spot local wildlife and work together to find the missing pieces needed to complete the challenge.

4. Beach Games

Meditation, tai chi and yoga classes, RPM group cycling sessions and dodgeball tournaments, the RACV Torquay Resort has all the ingredients necessary for an excellent conference or team building day. Despite offering a smorgasbord of fun activities ideal for groups, the resort’s beachside location isn’t to be underestimated. The resort’s trainers often take groups to the Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club for action-packed games sessions. Sandcastle building competitions, treasure hunts and beach flag races will bring the competitive nature out in even the most laidback members of the group!

5. Lawn Bowls Tournament

Sports can be a bit hit or miss with corporate groups. How can an organiser incorporate outdoor activities into the agenda when a group consists of people with wildly different levels of fitness? The answer is lawn bowls. At the RACV Healesville Country Club, the perfect accompaniment to a teambuilding day or weekend is a leisurely group lawn bowls session. With the help of a friendly instructor, groups can learn the ropes and start playing at their own pace. Of course, there will always be that one competitive person who takes it too seriously, but overall, lawn bowls is a low-impact, fun game ideal for everyone, from Cheryl the long-serving bookkeeper to Ali the legal intern.

6. Golf Challenge

Up on the Gold Coast, the RACV Royal Pines Resort is a relaxed spot for a conference or event. With the ability to host up to 1800 guests, large corporations will particularly enjoy making use of the ample space afforded by the resort and its lush surrounds. Hosting the Australian PGA Championship, the golf course at Royal Pines is suitable for golfers of all abilities (or inabilities)! Groups will love breaking up a conference day by facing off against each other in a putting competition, while employees on a reward trip will appreciate taking their game to the next level with a one-on-one coaching session with a golf professional.

7.  Pub crawl with a historic twist

Located right in the heart of the city, the RACV Hobart Apartment Hotel is a top spot for conferences and corporate getaways. Some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, pubs and boutiques are right on the venue’s doorstep, meaning groups don’t have to travel far to have a break from the conference space. The Old Hobart Pub Tour is a fun way for groups to decompress at the end of a long strategy or conference day, instead of hiding in their hotel rooms watching TV. Suitable for drinkers and non-drinkers alike, the tour visits some of Hobart’s most renowned historic pubs, with a local guide telling rip-roaring yarns of convicts, smugglers, publicans and other colourful characters that have made modern-day Hobart what it is today.

8.  Beach horse-riding session

Groups can make the most of RACV Cape Schanck Resort’s prime location on the southern edge of the Mornington Peninsula by heading out into nature to breathe in the fresh sea air. Beach walks and swims are fun, but exploring St Andrew’s Beach on horseback is an unforgettable experience that really puts things into perspective. Whether it’s starting the day with a group ride at sunrise or winding down at the end of the day with a sunset ride, seeing waves crash into the shore while riding a trusty steed is a memorable experience to share as group. Back at the resort, massages and hydrotherapy at One Spa soothe tired muscles.

9. Snooker, Wine Tasting or a Movie

In Melbourne CBD, RACV City Club offers budding pool sharks the opportunity to participate in a snooker masterclass in the iconic Carbine Bar with their resident professional, a triple world champion who offers events including ‘Trick Shots’, ‘Team Building’ and ‘Coaching’. Event organisers are also able to arrange private food and wine pairings in the beautiful wine cellar space with the resident sommelier, or book the private theatrette for a movie session compete with drinks, choc tops and popcorn.
